Big news Saucy followers! Saucy just exited the Tri-State area, and we’ve got some things to say about it.
NJ: sneaky little beast
We were thrilled to exit Pennsylvania and finally hit some smaller and less rocky states… BUT NO! New Jersey was in fact also very rocky. These rocks coupled with some intense rain made for new challenges as the trail turned into a complete swamp. Luckily NJ was only 80 miles, so this pain didn’t last too long.
NY: mountain? what’s a mountain?
We hit the NY border in what felt like no time and found ourselves with some serious mountains and elevation that reminded us of the Smokies! We had lots of fun rock scrambles and satisfying views, including a view of the NYC skyline! Such a surreal moment to see NYC knowing we had walked from GA! Sarah’s boyfriend, Alex, also visited for a weekend, and we had a blast showing him around.
The first half of NY was simply too much hiking, so we decided to do the exact opposite and go into NYC!! It was an insane culture shock but we had so much fun trying on the Sephora makeup, eating real food, and drinking wine! And they say we aren’t classy!
In NY, things also took a turn for the worse as Bug came down with a mystery illness. Bug and Cham spent a couple of days waiting out the illness and the dangerous smoke. Unfortunately, this sickness was probably Lyme disease but confirming with a doctor soon.
After, Chameleon’s parents whisked the Brewbs away to Silo, where Chameleon’s family friends hosted them for the weekend. It was the most magical zero ever, and we are endlessly thankful for the Brooks’s!
CT: short and steep
At this point, we had done a whole lot of not hiking, and jokes were being made about snow in Maine by the time we finish, so we decided it was best to start grinding out some more miles. Because Bug was still recovering and we wanted to do as many miles as possible, we road walked some of CT to avoid steep climbs.
MARY: a trail angel impossible to forget!
A severe thunderstorm was going to roll in CT, so we were hiding out in a cafe. After the cafe posted our picture to their Facebook, a sweet lady named Mary walked in and kidnapped us! She took all of us in for the night and showed us around town. She even took us to the dump so we could pick out anything we wanted…
With that, we will stay at Mary’s tonight and enter MA tomorrow. Hope all of yall are staying cool!
