Alright everyone… time to switch these blog posts up! Here to walk you through a day in the life of Saucy…
06/06: 22 miles
Bacon Hollow Overlook -> Big Meadows Campground (mile 905 to mile 927)
📌Shenandoah National Park
We woke up to a magical sunrise at Bacon Hollow Overlook, where we had cowboy camped the night before! It was a recipe for a horrible nights sleep out in the open, especially when ants got into our sleeping bags in the middle of the night. Well worth it for the stars and the views though! Knowing we had 22 miles to hike, we were up and at ‘em, hiking around 7am.
The Shenandoah’s have been very near and dear to our hearts as we grew up coming here! It’s been surreal to now have walked here from Georgia 🧙♀️ that being said, the miles are definitely taking a toll on our bodies, and we find ourselves in a trance walking everyday!
6 miles in we hit trail magic!!! A local couple fed us hot dogs, watermelon, and homemade brownies. They come out every year to meet the new thru hikers on the block, and count how many come through every day!
MORE TRAIL MAGIC!!! At this point we should just stop carrying food because we have been seriously spoiled by trail angels. This crew fed us a hearty lunch of bagels, deviled eggs, burgers, cookies, and fruit. They even had live music! After hiking 10 miles, we had worked up an appetite and ate as much as we could.
RATTLESNAKE ALERT!! We came across two day hikers who luckily warned us that there was a super rare Timber Rattlesnake crossing the trail…when we tried to go on our merry way, it even began rattling at us
The grumps started to hit around mile 20… our feet got tired and we still had a gnarly two mile uphill climb to end the day. Ladybugs face says it all! We went so loopy that we decided that anytime we walked uphill, the ground was actually flat and it was just us that was tilted.
Spirits immediately higher when we hit the iconic Big Meadow sign at 6pm! We walked in listening to Florence + The Machine so you know it was a magical entrance.
We destroyed some burgers and blackberry milkshakes at the Big Meadow lodge for dinner. This was gone in about three minutes.
Time for some camp chores! So we did illegally camp in the forest between the lodge and campground because the campground was filled up with day hikers… but we got to do laundry in the communal showers and enjoy some hot water!
Obviously ended the day in the Tap Room bar at the lodge with an awesome game of cards made more entertaining by the tequilas shots that were taken.
